FlyWrench delivers in the nostalgia category as you mix space and puzzles for one endless game.
FlyWrench is a frantic action game from Messhof. You are tasked with piloting a spaceship through the depths of space which is presented in a series of puzzles. I knew nothing about FlyWrench other than it was by Messhof and their previous game Nidhogg was a fun fencing game with pixelated old school style graphics.

My initial reaction when I first loaded this game was something along the lines of “what is this crap?” The graphics are basic and gameplay is not that engaging for the first few levels, but then it slowly sucks you in (suddenly you realize that you’ve been playing FlyWrench for 2 hours non stop). Gameplay is all about matching your ship’s color to obstacle color to safely pass them. If you make one mistake the level resets, it reminded me of endless runner games. The beginning of the game is simple and it serves as the tutorial, a long tutorial that lulls you in a false sense of knowing what to do before the difficulty is cranked up considerably. This where it becomes an engaging fun game.
However, it just feels like a game that should have been released a few decades ago instead. Graphics look as I mentioned before, basic, but as you progress through levels their design and difficulty take precedence over graphics as you try and beat them. It is still a game that in my opinion would be better suited to smaller monitors other than 50+ inch TVs.

All in all it’s a good game but it just feels like it’s been released in a wrong time. It is good to see that Messhof is keeping to their commitment of releasing simple retro style games with addictive gameplay and I am sure their game finds their niche and will be popular, this one is just not for me.
