TellTale‘s newest episodic game is their first collaboration with Marvel on the widely popular franchise Guardians of The Galaxy. It is not their first experience with comics (The Walking Dead, Fable, Batman) and in this installment it doesn’t quite hit the mark. This episode is all over the place it goes from great to good to bad and then to good again.

The Guardians of The Galaxy Telltale Series is set in their own universe separate from Comics and Movies but it is clearly influenced by the movie. The first episode serves mainly as an introduction to the universe and main characters in it. The art design of some of the characters was not that great in my opinion, like Gamora just looks weird. From the beginning you are thrown into action and it sets quite a fast pace for first few minutes. The cinematic storytelling is great until you are given control of Peter Quill and it all falls apart. Exploration is lackluster and controls aren’t that great and being able to levitate to explore upper levels does not add anything other than prolonging the agony that is exploration until you are able to move on. After that comes the best part of this episode, the fight sequence, and it is AWESOME! the team dynamic comes into play where you control all 5 of them doing combos and it just looks fantastic.

The outcome was unexpected and I wasn’t sure where they were going to go after this. Who would have guessed but after an epic battle it was time for a party? It was a good way to introduce characters, however it felt a bit too long and the jokes were out of place. The dialogue choices didn’t seem to matter at all even what seemed to be the biggest choice of the episode had no effect on what was going on it seems (maybe it will be important later in the series). The next action sequence was good, not as epic as the first one but good (just the shooting was not that great).

There were quite a few surprises and I am curious about how the story is going to progress, but this TellTale experiment was hit and miss. It had good moments like the story, soundtrack, some cinematic parts where you had minimal control and bad ones like gameplay mechanics, voice acting and character design. With all that said I still think that it’s worth playing through just for those good moments and hopefully it will keep improving with each new episode.
