Nintendo has done the unexpected and brought their 2DS model back with some updated features. May I present the New 2DS XL! Is this model worth your time? Why not just get a 3DS? Did I leave the oven on? Let’s find out!
Hello fellow gamers! So Nintendo released an announcement regarding the new iteration of DS and it has me pretty excited. They’ve brought back their 2DS model but tweaked it a little to make it comparable to the current 3DS, the New 3DS. As someone who purchased an original 2DS over the original 3DS I feel like it’s worth considering if you’re looking to join the Nintendo handheld community, here’s why:

Playing with Power
The New 2DS XL at it’s base is more powerful system than it’s 2DS predecessor. It will decrease load times while simultaneously allowing players to expand their 3DS libraries and finally try out some exclusive New 3DS titles too like Xenoblade Chronicles 3D.
Mario Amiibo on the New 2DS XL
This model also has built in Amiibo support, allowing for the full experience of games like Super Smash Bros. or Mario Maker 3DS. In addition, this model also has updated physical controls including the C-stick and the secondary L and R buttons!
Pricing
One of the many games available for play! Mario Maker isn’t even in 3D to start with!
This is a big plus for this system. At $149.99 it’s just a tad bit more accessible than the $199.99 price tag of the New 3DS XL. Now is fifty dollars extra that much for a face-tracking 3D function? Not really, but fifty dollars is fifty dollars, and if it’s a feature you think you may not use then why not skip it and save some money?
Potential problems?
As the name would indicate, the New 2DS XL can’t play anything in 3D. To me this isn’t the biggest of problems as I don’t use the 3D function on my New 3DS all that often, but if you really want the most complete 3DS game experience this is something to factor into your decisions.
I also have to say, the concept of using the word “New” in the title of a product is one of the most confusing things I’ve encountered in gaming titles. “I bought a new New 2DS”? Come on Nintendo. You can’t just use an adjective that we would use to describe the thing we’re buying as the first word in the title of the aforementioned thing being bought!

Overall
I honestly wish this system had come out before I bought my New 3DS. At the price point, and with all the updated features, this is an incredibly reasonable substitute. If you don’t think you’ll actually use the 3D function of a 3DS much, like spending a little less cash, and playing all the same games as your 3DS owning friends, this could be a great choice for you. Check it out on release day, July 28th!
