War of Kings is the tabletop equivalent of crossing Sim City with Risk and set in a medieval/fantasy world!
In War of Kings players compete to conquer as much of the world map and accumulate resources faster than their opponents. The game ends once one player earns 13 achievement points (similar to victory points in other games).
The game is rated for players ages thirteen and older. I would say that this is a fair assessment as the game has a deep level of complexity that younger gamers might find off putting. For instance when battling another army, when you attack you are hoping to roll warhammers on the attack dice and the opponent defends with shields. Simple enough so far. When the opponent retaliates they are hoping to roll flails and you would also need shields to defend. Several other dice are used to allocate resources. I think to avoid confusion attacking regardless of which army went first should be the same.
Gameplay is streamlined in the construction phase to decrease wait times in what could be a dull campaign due to slower players trying to build their territories. In the end it is faster paced than I expected overall but may just be too slow for some children, especially if they get bored easily like mine do.
We found the game to be enjoyable in the end, but we would also rather play games more centered on warfare and total domination. For those that love building cities and collecting resources like in Sim City you will most definitely enjoy this game. Even so our favorite aspect of this game was the game pieces and the map. Both can easily be used in fantasy based role playing games as an overall map. As for the value for your money though I think that the game may be a bit overpriced. You DO get a large number of game pieces and tokens that could easily be used in other games but the gameplay isn’t entertaining enough to justify a nearly $90 price tag. I would wait for this game to go on sale before purchasing.
