Big Bad Wolf Studios has released the first episode of a new take on the episodic adventure game with The Council.
The contemporary format of episodic gaming has a standard format that many companies have followed where your decisions might only change some minor dialogue options and not much more. With The Council each action can change so much of what happens that you might not recognize what happens next.
You begin the game with very little context about what is transpiring, but it is still easy enough to follow along. Within a few minutes the location changes and you learn that the mother of your character has gone missing and you’ve been asked to the join some of her friends at a party on the very same island she disappeared from.
Unlike most episodic games, you can develop your character in an RPG like fashion, selecting an occupation and adding points to different options in your skill tree. The skills unlock different opportunities like picking locks on chests or offering new dialogue options. The story can easily be completed in only an hour or two, but exploring the additional locations will add to not only the enjoyment of the game, but expand on the story. You will need to convince some of the characters to join your cause and your investigations can unlock more persuasive dialogue choices.
The story hints at the occult somehow being involved and brings some of history’s most famous leaders to the middle of the mystery. The narrative is interesting but doesn’t stand out from the other episodic games out there but it DOES offer a different period in time and genre than the others available and is visually gorgeous.
