It has been over a decade since we’ve been in the fascinating world of Psychonauts and it brings a feeling of nostalgia playing as Raz again. However, as with almost all PSVR games I’ve played it is short and feels more like a tech demo. A very cool one but still just a demo more then a proper release.

You are on a mission as the newly full fledged Psychonaut Raz to rescue the Head of Psychonauts, but it does not go as planed and you will need to rescue your friends. The whole game is played from a first person perspective while remaining stationary. It is not dissimilar to a point and click adventure with the clever use of a readily available variety of powers from the original Psychonauts to help you look for clues and solve puzzles. The main one being clairvoyance. It’s what allows you to move from place to place while being bound to a chair (in game). Other powers are telekinesis, psy blast, and pyrokinesis and all of them are used to solve puzzles.

Puzzles are not too complicated but  most of them have more then one solution which adds a variety and possible replayability. The world is beautiful and the Rhombus Ruins are Double Fine’s take on the Bermuda Triangle. They show us a glimpse of the mysteries and all that was lost in it, even if the interactions are limited it is still fascinating to descend deeper into the Ruins. That is quickly replaced by smaller rooms in which you solve puzzles. All of which are well crafted and it took me a few minutes each time to look around and try to find most of the intractable objects. However, it is just too short of an experience to fully immerse yourself into that world.

Psychonauts In The Rhombus Ruins is one of the better VR puzzle games I’ve played and nostalgia played quite a big part in me enjoying this demo for the Psychonauts 2. It peeked my interest in the sequel, which hopefully will be out in the near future. If you have a PSVR and are looking for an enjoyable puzzle game then look no further. Double FIne’s first experiment with the VR deserves to be noticed!

Have a favorite Psychonauts moment? Excited for the sequel? Want to tell us about it? Leave a comment!
