For Honor a tactical fighting game has been out for little over a month at the time of this article and I wanted to share my thoughts on the state of the game.
For Honor, from Ubisoft, had a strong start as the best selling game in February and good reviews, but soon after it became apparent that the game was plagued with bugs, exploits, errors and connection issues. I spent about 100 hours playing For Honor and I loved the game. The concept is great and the graphics are beautiful. The complexity of some character move-sets and mix ups can be challenging to master and it makes me want to play them (e.g raider, berserker).
I plan on spending at least another 100 hours on For Honor, however the lag and connection issues are just too frustrating at times and it takes ages to find a match. When you find one it’s about 50/50 if it’s going to play until the end or you are going to get disconnected. Then there’s the lag, sure hits miss, blocks don’t connect or my favorite one is when it skips a second and I’m on half health on the different part of the map. Exploits/Glitches or “tech” when you use them can be found with every hero from flickering attacks when not attacking, unparryable and unblockable to lights that do more damage when you are not locked then they should or guard break cancel into heavy attacks. The devs are trying to fix them but for every one they fix there are 2 more found. It doesn’t break the game or make it unplayable it just makes you rage and game stops being fun. Then there’s balancing issues some which are all over the place. For instance, you have one hero that hits for 45 with the heavy and another for 63 or even 70 which, also has gear stats that are too strong at the moment approaching the 108 gear score (max at the moment) with revenge build can get 3-4 revenge attacks in one fight. Even if you outplay them they still have a 50/50 chance to kill you because of revenge. Makes it not fun to level and learn new hero’s when most people you go against are at the max gear score.
Adding an option to play all game modes with gears stats off would make things a lot better in my opinion. The meta that favors defensive playstyles is just not for me as I’m an aggressive player who likes to attack and put pressure on the opponent. For Honor is meant to have a Ranked Mode but at the moment it’s not even close to ready for anything really competitive and it will take a very long time to fix everything to make it ready for that. I would love to see that happen but with the player base dwindling with each week (it takes slightly longer to find matches and you see the same people more often each week) I fear there won’t be enough people left to compete in those ranked modes. There are already community tournaments which is nice to see. It means there are people who are invested in the game and see the potential in it but for now- For Honor is broken.
With all that said it still a good game and when it works it’s beautiful, you just need to stop thinking about all the problems and have fun with it. To further enjoyment do some crazy combos, try different heroes and just have fun. I know I will be playing it that way from now on and am going to learn 2-3 new heroes and look for that perfect outfit for each one of them which probably will take a lot of grinding for steel and waiting for them to release new heroes after season one of Faction Wars ends (Go Vikings!!!).
