Nintendo Does Its Own Thing (Again) But Catches Attention and Builds Hype for E3 2017

As per their usual, Nintendo presented their direct conference by their own rules. It was a relatively brief and succinct overview of games we’ve known about for a few months and a few big surprises that got a lot of fans going. So let’s take at a look at Nintendo at this year’s E3.

Metroid: Samus Returns and Prime 4

That’s right, our favorite space alien busting bounty hunter is back. And with two games!

While it wasn’t more than a plain title and working title, Metroid Prime 4 is huge news. Samus hasn’t really had a true game since the Wii, Metroid Prime Corruption. The title is currently the only indication that it will, obviously, continue the Prime storyline and that it is currently in development. But no planned date of release has been set. We can probably look forward to next year’s E3 or a special Treehouse.

But even more surprising was a second Metroid game. Metroid: Samus Returns surprised audiences with a release date for this September. The game promises to be reflect the traditional 2D side scrollers from earlier games. It is heavily similar to Metroid 2: Return of Samus for the Game Boy and is touted as a reimagining. So you have something to look forward to September 15th.

Core Pokemon Game Coming to Switch

Yes, that’s right. Another big surprise from Nintendo. No release date, gameplay, or trailers were released but Nintendo let the world know a core Pokemon game is in development for the Switch. This game will be unlike its other main console counterparts from Stadium to Tournament. It will be a continuation of the main series found on handheld consoles.

This new Pokemon game is spotlighting the Switch’s mobility and will most likely utilize the console’s features to their fullest potential. It will be great to see what they come up with when they have something more concrete to showcase.

Super Mario Odyssey Shows Promise

Mario in the real world? While we’ve known about the game for some time now, most weren’t sure how to feel. But Nintendo’s had a solid chance to show us what the new Odyssey game can do. And it looks really fun.

Super Mario Odyssey blends familiar mechanics from older titles and fresh, new actions unique to this game. Not only is it wild to see Mario in “the real world” but the absurd things he can do with Cappy. The game is currently available for pre-order and is set to release October 27th.

And Plenty More!

They didn’t show much on stage. Rather they directed fans to their Treehouse where they’ve been showing various demos and gameplay for upcoming games. They’ve even hosted special tournaments for Pokemon Tournament DX and Splatoon 2. In addition, they’ve further pushed summer releases for the Switch for games like ARMS.

Some notable games to be on the look out for in the future include:

  • Xenoblade Chronicles 2 – Christmas 2017
  • Kirby Switch (working title)
  • Yoshi Switch (working title)
  • Fire Emblem Warriors – Fall 2017
  • Rocket League
  • Mario + Rabbids: Kingdom Battle – August 29th

They even have set dates for The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild DLC. The Master Trials will be available June 30.

The new Zelda DLC promises to add new mechanics and CPU AI to challenge the player rather than simple health and attack/defense tweaking.

But…

Yeah, the same as every year, excluding Samus this time. Where’s F-Zero? Donkey Kong? And Star Fox? Animal Crossing?! While we may have not seen anything for them this time, I am desperately hopeful. They have been secretly working on Metroid after all, so big news just may be around the corner.

And no Smash for Switch. But we all know it’s coming and relatively soon. So no worries about that. And it’ll be awesome.

Nintendo E3 2017 Kingdom Battle

It’s like X-COM but with Mario and Rabbids. Yeah, you read that right.

Final Verdict for Nintendo E3 2017?

They did all right. Not great with their conference but they definitely made up with announcements and Metroid. Overall it was pretty good. Kingdom Battle with the Rabbids was definitely a surprise and it looks great despite initial feelings. So it’s shaping up to be a great year for the Switch and Nintendo. Hopefully they’ll be able to move past the lukewarm success of the Wii and Wii U.
