“Yet, hope can bloom even amidst the broken wreckages of a forlorn world.” – Insidia
Images and gameplay for Insidia are courtesy of Bad Seed, gameplay featuring Odiumar as a team of post apocalyptic champions.
Bad Seed, is an Italian start up studio, responsible for the games Sheep Up! and Sleep Attack. They’ve garnered enough attention that a few folks from Ubisoft have also joined the team, and their successes on the mobile market have them feeling ready for cross-platform with Insidia. Someday, that is.
The world has ended! No…wait…um…the world has moved on! Stop…scratch that too. Okay, it’s post apocalyptic and all that jazz. However, you’d never know that based on your experience with the game. You play as a team of four champions, chosen from a veritable pantheon of twelve. Choose wisely though, because some of these guys are so broken they are only good for walking point and taking the first bullet. Your job (their job) is to take control of the big gun in the center of a small arena and blast open the gates to the other teams castle. Quick slip inside and bomb their power source and boom…game over! It’s really that simple. Oh…and it’s sort of PvP. Outside the arena, nothing exists.
This game is absolutely broken! There, I’ve said it. It’s off my chest. Now maybe I can be a bit more objective. I’ll explain later.
Gameplay for Insidia, is a top-down view, with a locked in perspective. It doesn’t matter how much you would like to be able to swing around and view things from a different angle…nope, ain’t happening. Action takes place in turns…you get to do something with one of your champions, like deploy it to the battle field, or move, or shoot…some kind of action. Each champion has their own specialty, one is a tank to take damage, others are shooters or support. (They suck, avoid them.) The idea is to stand on a cross in the center of the arena, unopposed for three turns. Once that happens a big gun pops up and shoots one of three gates in front of your opponents castle. Send one of your champions through that hole and drop a bomb into the power port and your done. Of course the other team is going to be trying to do the same thing. Knocking you off of the gun, killing your characters (who will respawn a limited number of times) etc. There’s really not much too it. Oh, don’t forget to go into the “shop” section so that you can learn your characters. Othewise you’ll have to learn them on the field of battle. The action itself is sort of turn-based. You have a limited amount of time to decide what you’re going to do. Your opponent will be planning their moves at the same time. Then, when everyone is done or time is up, the champions will perform the actions you picked in their “initiative” order.
The graphics for Insidia are actually pretty cool. It’s no triple-A game, but the champions have character and their animations are pretty neat. The way they wiggle around between turns reminds me of Han Solo’s space chess game in Star Wars: A New Hope. Beyond that little piece of entertainment, there’s nothing to write home about. But let’s face it…one doesn’t download a free-to-play game expecting to be visually dazzled. The music is right up my alley, rock infused computer generated beats! Quite exciting…which you’ll need to keep the blood pumping.
Now some folks might tell you that a free game has enormous value…you’re getting something for nothing. I’m here to tell you that just isn’t so. Yes, Insidia is free. The DLC does have a cost to it, hefty too, but considering you get a 100% XP boost, that’s not bad. But…as I said, this game is broken. You’ll never get a single achievement…at least not if you don’t bring along a friend. Why? No online community. I tried four separate occasions to get into a PvP match, to no avail. No one is paying this game and the offline mode stops after the tutorial! Like I said…broken.
Wise Old Gamer Says: Pass. Why download a game, even a free one, if you can’t get past the tutorial?
