“We’re going to need more EDF guys.” – Kepler, Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered

Red Faction: Guerrilla was developed by Volition and published by THQ in 2009. In the aftermath of THQ’s closure, the Red Faction license and THQ brand were acquired by Nordic games, which subsequently re-branded as THQ Nordic. The update, “Red Faction: Guerrilla Re-Mars-tered” was issued from THQ Nordic in 2018.
Story
In Red Faction: Guerrilla, you will step into the shoes of Alec Mason. Alec has recently arrived on Mars, reuniting with his brother Dan. Unfortunately for Alec, Mars is a battleground. Military action takes place between the oppressive EDF (Earth Defense Force) and the Red Faction guerrillas, that fight for Martian rights. Dan is a member of the resistance forces. Alec’s fate was sealed the minute that the EDF took Dan’s life. Welcome to the resistance.
Gameplay
Red Faction: Guerrilla has something for everyone. Epic gun battles, property destruction, vehicle battles and multiplayer. It’s all here. You’ll start out with a couple of directed missions, which will eventually become an open world experience. Mars is separated into sectors that require liberation. Freedom is won at the completion of a predetermined number of guerrilla actions. The guerrilla actions can include property destruction, asset snatches and hostage rescues.
The game’s mini-map marks the location for each guerrilla action and destruction target. This is also where you will find the freedom countdown for each sector. Finding the shortest route to your destination is as easy as touching a button! The map hosts a morale tracker for each area. It’s an invaluable tool, especially when you’re running low on ammo.
Style
Red Faction: Guerrilla, the Re-Mars-tered edition has received a substantial overhaul. Unfortunately, it shows. Graphically, the game is adequate. It looks good, but it feels like watching an updated episode of the original Star Trek. It may look good, but it handles like a 360 game. Weapon use is clunky and inexact. Driving, while loads of fun, is far from realistic.
The music is good, and keeps pace with the action of the game. Typically I find myself shutting down a games soundtrack in favor of the sound effects. Fortunately, Red Faction’s soundtrack made the cut.
Is it worth it?
The remastered edition of Red Faction: Guerrilla carries a $30 price tag. Considering the size of the world, the number of missions and the massive volume of destruction in the game, that feels very fair. However, be warned that this is a completionists nightmare. Unfortunately, the multiplayer servers are dead. I tried multiple times and across a number of days, with no luck. Each time, I was the only person signed into the game queues. That will put a number of achievements/trophies permanently out of reach, unless you bring some friends with you. Consider that when making your choice.
Wise Old Gamer says: Buy, but only if you’ve never played the original.
