Tell me if you’ve heard this one- A duck and a pig walk into a bar? No? What about playing as the duck and the pig in Mutant Year Zero? In Road to Eden (from Funcom) you do just that and so much more!
Mutant Year Zero is a traditional Pen and Paper styled role playing game but in console form. Gone are the archaic pens, paper and dice. Mutant Year Zero, MYZ for short, is a post-apocalyptic world where mutants and subhumans reign, with a mild dash of stubborn humans remain. You play as Bormin (Pig/Boar) and Dux (Duck) in this isometric world, taking turns using a set number of actions for each character. Each area you reach the characters can wander together, or solo, looking for scrap metal and other goodies. The moment your characters find an enemy or the enemy finds you though, we enter the turn based mode. During this mode you will move about the landscape (with defined barriers you can’t cross) to target your enemies.
Each attack gives you a percentage on how likely you are to hit the target and it is usually spot on. At a set distance I saw 50% chance to hit and over multiple turns fired 4 total shots on the enemy and twice. This was consistent throughout the game.
Each character delivers their own quips based on the situation and ironically enough sound like characters I would have written myself.
Game mechanics are solid for this game, using an upgrade system that actually makes sense along with movement and attacking controls that felt natural. Graphically the game is beautiful, despite the world having been thrown into chaos and nature reclaiming much of what society had built.
If you like games that require you to think about your actions, or give you a challenge, this game is for you! Especially if you are a fan of the classic RPG, you will find this a perfect adaptation into that world. I give this game a wing and a hoof way up!
