Nearly 100 years ago HP Lovecraft penned his masterpiece The Call of Cthulhu and 37 years ago the Role Playing Game adaptation was released. In October of last year Focus Home Interactive released their game inspired by both of these works.
The Call of Cthulhu game places you as a washed up private investigator who is in danger of losing his license and is reminded that if he doesn’t take a case soon he will no longer be able to work in the field. Less than a minute later there is a knock on the door and a client begging him to take the case. The man’s daughter recently died along with her husband and child in a fire and he needs you to confirm if something foul happened or if his daughter is as insane as people are telling him. Already the police the fire was the work of a deranged woman who one day snapped, killing herself and those she loved. The whole tales seems to have wrapped up too neatly to sit well with her father. Listening to him speak he definitely is convinced that his daughter, while on the weird side at times, would never do this to her family. He admits that something DID happen to her though because of a painting she sent him. Believing it was sent to be preserved, he suspects that she was anticipating something happening to her and wanted to get the truth out there.
This is all within the first five to ten minutes of the game. You get to ask him a few questions and are expected to draw your own conclusions from them. After accepting the case your adventure begins, transitioning into a stormy yet beautifully rendered video as the boat you are on arrives at Inkwell Island.
Players then take control and their actions determine how the story or case plays out. You must monitor the sanity of your character because the more tense the situations you find yourself in the crazier things may become later. Visually throughout the game is gorgeous, even when walking among the remains of butchered whales and sharks. Controls are solid, giving a natural feel to how you guide your character. Lastly the story is well told and dynamic. If you are a fan of Lovecraft, Cthulhu or detective games you will love The Call of Cthulhu!
