Sometimes You Can’t Help But Laugh at Funny Cosplay
If you’ve been following my articles on cosplay, you’ll understand that it’s a fun activity for everyone. In Being a Good Aficionado I explained that most cosplay should be respected and admired, but some is purposefully funny. Not everything has to be so serious and we have to remind ourselves to live it up a little, even if it means cosplaying down a lot. Today, we’ll look at some examples of funny cosplay.

A rather literal but funny cosplay of Cloud. It’s actually pretty impressive. Youmacon 2010; photo courtesy of xxdisturbedsavio. Top image courtesy of Clara Croft.
The Ingenuity of Low Cost Cosplay
We’ve all seen them, hilarious pictures of someone using ridiculous props and materials to cosplay. As it turns out, there’s a single person who dedicates themselves to this. Low Cost Cosplay has both an Instagram account and Facebook page for you to enjoy. His iconic posts go to absurd lengths to portray a character. Even going as far as using food or even household items. Probably the best part is that he does end up looking like the character, even if it’s a little scary at times. I always enjoy seeing his funny cosplay come up in posts across the internet.
Man Faye
Many years ago, I stumbled upon an unflattering Faye Valentine. I remember looking into it and finding out this guy regularly did this for fun. I’d forgotten about him and when researching other funny cosplay, I found Man Faye again. Man Faye is exactly as described. This is definitely one of the more hilarious cosplay out there. Before the days of Reddit and Tumblr, he was definitely a classic internet meme.
They’re Out There
Not all funny cosplay is an instant internet meme. Some are more lowkey. I remember hearing about a couple cosplaying as Bruce Wayne’s parents and would play dead whenever they came across a Batman. The numerous Deadpools at each con gathers a lot of like minded individuals. Even in more traditional cosplay, people gather and role play. They’re out there, all the unorthodox costumes and ideas. Be sure to be on the lookout for them!
Just Have Fun!
Cosplay is fun! From the perfectly detailed to the “budget friendly”, it’s fun to do and it’s fun to look at. If you see some funny cosplay, let them know you really enjoy their costume. And if you have a silly idea, follow through! If I had to do something crazy, I would crossplay as Sailor Moon and strut my stuff.
